The Hope in Healing Fund Story

In honor of Mary Bayard and the hundreds of lives who found help through her warmth, caring and dedication to their healing, we created the Hope In Healing Fund: Mary Bayard Honorary Scholarship when she retired in 2009.

As Roanoke Park Counseling's Clinical Supervisor from 1992 to 2009, Mary's was the first voice survivors heard in response to their request for help.

Mary's reassuring and welcoming presence eased the very difficult first steps to begin healing for hundreds of men and women. They often expressed to her in their first visit that they felt hope for the first time.

Mary often commented that needing to turn survivors away when they couldn't afford services was the most difficult part of her job. Without a dedicated fund, serving our lowest fee clients easily compromised our ability to serve other clients.

In honor of Mary's dedication to each and every survivor of childhood sexual abuse and to RPC's mission of providing affordable services for all, we created the Hope in Healing Fund.

The Hope in Healing Fund is a pool of funding restricted to the sole purpose of paying the therapy fees that clients who qualify for a scholarship cannot afford. We are able to support scholarship clients based on donations in the fund. Since 2009, 152 women and men have received therapy at RPC funded by scholarship donations.

ALDEN'S STORY

Alden saw a poster for Roanoke Park Counseling's community outreach event, Turn the Light On, and made his way to the park where people had gathered.

He felt uncomfortable with his backpack and disheveled clothes, and the topic, so he stood toward the back of the crowd. When speakers took the stage and shared their stories about being sexually abused as children and their journey to find help and healing, Alden's world began to spin.

It had been over 70 years since his childhood, but he remembered his own abuse clearly. He had told no one and believed he would take his secret feelings of shame to his grave.

When Alden noticed the word "affordable" next to RPC's phone number, he decided to call and he learned that he qualified for our Hope in Healing scholarship.

Each week he took the bus to RPC, lugging his big backpack holding most of his worldly goods up the stairs to meet his therapist. Months passed before Alden felt enough trust and safety to reveal the long held story of his abuse by his parish priest and his parents' unwillingness to believe or protect him.

"I believed that the abuse was my fault all these years. I don't think I have many years left to live." With tears streaming down, Alden told his therapist, "You can't possibly know what it's like to finally be free from this burden at this time in my life."

Please help us to continue to provide therapy to people like Alden, make a gift today.

You can't possibly know what it's like to finally be free from this burden at this time in my life.
